This year’s Social Justice Sunday
statement will focus on Australia’s
treatment and responses to asylum
seekers and refugees.
The Australian Catholic Bishops
Conference 2015-16 statement will be
issued on September 9 and is titled “For
Those Who’ve Come Across the Seas:
Justice for refugees and asylum seekers”.
The Statement marks Social Justice
Sunday, celebrated nationally on
September 27, and its title is taken
from the second verse of Australia’s
national anthem as a reminder of national
aspirations to be welcoming and inclusive.
“In this Social Justice Statement,
Australia’s Bishops ask us to re-
examine our responses to refugees and
asylum seekers,” says ACBC president
Archbishop Denis Hart in a letter.
“The Statement reminds us of the nearly
60 million people around the world who
are displaced from their homes and of the
war and violence devastating countries in
the Middle East, Africa and Asia,” he says.

A desire to reach out and meet the needs of younger
people in the community has led to Glenelg parish
initiating an innovative program that promotes artistic
skills and beautifies the local area.
“We have done a good job providing outreach to the
elderly through our activities in St Dominic’s hall but we
wanted to expand this to youth and other groups in the
community,” said parish pastoral council member Ron
Through a $1000 grant and the involvement of local urban
artist Gary Lyons, the parish was able to hold twice-
weekly art classes for community members over the age
The group was provided with 20 blank stobie pole panels
which they are painting over an eight-week period,
commencing in July. Parishioners were asked to share
their talents in line with the quote from Pope Francis “we
all have the duty to do good”.
The classes are being held in St Mary’s Hall in High Street
and the panels are being progressively displayed in the
foyer of the adjacent Our Lady of Victories Church, prior to
being installed on the stobie poles.
“The participants come from all different backgrounds and
are different ages,” said Ron. “It’s been great to see their
skills and confidence develop.”
The parish is hoping to stage a similar program next
