Special Masses were held at the Ottoway and Morphett Vale
parishes on February 17 to celebrate the 180th anniversary of
the formation of the Congregation of the Resurrection.
The Congregation of the Resurrection began in Paris on
February 17 1836, under the leadership of Bogdan Janski. It
developed from the spiritual needs of those involved in the
Great Polish Exodus that followed the November Uprising in
Janski became the leading lay apostle of the Polish emigrants
in France, with many renewing their own religious life and
sacrificing themselves for God and others.
After the death of their founder on July 2 1840 his disciples,
under the direction of Fr Peter Semenenko and Fr Jerome
Kajsiewicz, who were the co-founders of the Congregation,
continued to develop his ideas.
On Easter Sunday March 27 1842 they, together with five
other clerics, professed their first vows and dedicated
themselves to the Risen Saviour, calling themselves the
“Brothers of the Resurrection”.
In 1952 the International Congress of Lay Apostles in Rome
claimed Bogdan Janski as the precursor of the 19th century
Lay Apostolate. Today he is one of the Polish candidates for
The Congregation of the Resurrection is a religious community
of priests, permanent deacons and brothers serving in
parishes and institutes in Australia, Austria, Bermuda, Bolivia,
Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Poland,
Slovakia, Tanzania, Ukraine and the United States.
There are three Resurrection Fathers in the Adelaide
Archdiocese – Fr Roman Palma and Fr Marian Szablewski at
Morphett Vale and Fr Marek Ptak in Ottoway.
