Members of the St Vincent de Paul
Society in South Australia and
its Adelaide Conference recently
celebrated the life and work of Michael
Sidney Gubbins, after his passing on
April 17 2016.
Born in Alice Springs following the
Second World War, he grew up in the
south western suburbs of Adelaide
where he attended Brighton High
School before going on to complete
a Bachelor of Science and Diploma in
Education. He was conscripted into the
army in 1968.
Assigned to the Education Corps as
a sergeant, Michael was posted to
Darwin, and upon completion of his
service remained in the Top End to
teach mathematics. In late 1974 when
Cyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin, he
returned to Adelaide. In the years
that followed he taught at a number
of schools including Croydon High
School, St Ignatius’ College, Annesley
College, Mary MacKillop College and
McLaughlin College in Darwin, where he
gained the wide respect of teachers and
In addition to his time as an educator,
he also worked with the South
Australian Housing Trust and Defence
Community Organisation. Whether
through his teaching or during his
community work, Michael never
stopped working for Christ and he
dedicated his life to serving others.
He did this professionally in his paid
work and also in his commitment to
the St Vincent de Paul Society both
in South Australia and the Northern
Territory. Michael felt that the purpose
of our lives was to live for others and to
help those in need.
When Michael formally retired in 2014,
he joined the Adelaide Conference of
St Vincent de Paul, bringing with him
the qualities of a true Vincentian. His
values were always aligned to that of St
Vincent de Paul. He had empathy, was
kind, compassionate and willingly gave
of his time for home visitations and
His work with the Adelaide conference
included visiting people in need not just
in their homes but also the homeless,
volunteering with the Vincentian Centre
(a 49-bed homeless shelter for men in
Adelaide’s CBD) and helping Fred’s Van
to feed the many people who seek help
and visit the service at Gawler Place.
Michael will be remembered fondly by
all those who were lucky enough to
have their lives enriched through his
practical love and kindness.
His life is a reflection of the true
meaning of caritas, “Christian love of
human kind; charity in its purest form”.
