Adelaide Hills parish marked a double
anniversary on Sunday October 30,
celebrating both its long history and also
the more recent amalgamation that has
made it a unified parish for much of the
Archbishop Wilson led the celebrations
marking 50 years since the consecration of
St Matthew’s Church in Bridgewater and
20 years since its amalgamation with St
Matthew’s Birdwood (first opened in 1867)
and St Joseph the Worker Lobethal (first
opened in 1965).
About 200 parishioners from the three
Mass centres gathered to mark the
milestone at St Matthew’s, Bridgewater
followed by a “birthday” reception in
Archbishop Wilson said the St Matthew’s
Church building was significant for two
reasons: for the many “great events”
conducted there which were important to
the community, “but there are also many
other moments, I’m sure, where God has
directly involved himself in the lives of the
people who come here to worship”.
“Moments of joy and of sorrow and of
difficulty and of hope, people have come
here and become part of this Christian
community and have felt the presence
of God and the answer of Jesus to their
prayers,” said Archbishop Wilson.
Parish priest Fr Fred Farrugia thanked God
for the spiritual graces bestowed over the
past 50 years, the service of priests, past
and present, and the “endless prayers said
in this sacred place”.
“Looking ahead I am confident that God
will continue to bless us; we need to
continue to trust in him and believe that the
Holy Spirit is guiding us, even when we feel
lost and discouraged,” said Fr Farrugia.
St Matthew’s draws parishioners from
the Hills towns of Bridgewater, Stirling,
Aldgate, Hahndorf and surrounds, while
the parish area becomes much more
rural as it stretches north to Lobethal and
Birdwood. Another church, Our Lady of the
Rosary, Stirling, opened in 1882, is not a
regular Mass centre but hosts gatherings,
weddings and funerals.
At the anniversary service parishioners
were delighted to see two former parish
priests, Mgr John Swann and Fr John
Vildzius, in attendance along with Adelaide
Vicar General Fr Philip Marshall, who
played an active role in supporting the
parish in recent years when it did not have
a resident priest, and Fr Richard Morris.
Parishioner Pat Coffey, 79, moved to the
then parish of Stirling as a 13-year-old boy.
A member of the parish pastoral council,
Mr Coffey said the parish could be proud
of its past 20 years.
“As a parishioner of some 66 years, I’m
delighted with what has been achieved in
Fr Farrugia’s time with us. We look forward
to a renewed group of parishioners who
value the young and encourage our next
generation,” he said.
