"Euthanasia has been the subject of debate in our Parliament almost constantly for the past decade now," says AFA State Officer, Jerome Appleby. "What we have learnt from the debate, par ticularly in this last year, is that the good news about palliative care ser vices in Australia and the positive ef fect palliation can bring to difficult circumstances, is not widely understood." A recent documentar y aired on the ABC seems to suppor t the AFA's view. "When we examine the understandable fears experienced by people who receive a terminal diagnosis, researchers and palliative care specialists note that the explanation of palliation and the patient and their family's involvement in a care plan restores confidence and a sense of control. In such circumstances specialists repor t that in the vast majority of cases any thoughts of euthanasia or assisted suicide disappear," says Mr Appleby. The new website To CARE not to KILL draws together ar ticles and opinions from across Australia and the world including contributions from such luminaries as Professor Margaret Somer ville and activist Wesley J. Smith. It includes ar ticles on human dignity, disability and euthanasia, palliative care and public policy. "Few Australians, we would argue, have any meaningful understanding of what palliative care ser vices really offer. We hope that this website will help change that," Mr Appleby says. ̨ The website can be reached at www.family. org.au/care Move to support palliative care Adelaide's chief executives will have a chance to sleep out with the animals at the Adelaide Zoo in the middle of winter by taking par t in the inaugural Vinnies CEO Sleepout. The national initiative aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness, as well as money to suppor t Vinnies' homeless ser vices. The event will be held on the evening of June 17, 2010 in conjunction with a similar event in all other States. St Vincent de Paul Society Marketing and Development Manager Wayne Broadbridge said the collaboration with Adelaide Zoo for the location of the sleepout was an impor tant milestone. ̨ For further information or to register for the sleepout, call 8112 8714 or email adelaide@ ceosleepout.org.au Sleepout at the Zoo CEO SLEEPERS: Pictured at the launch of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout are, from left: Chris West, CEO of Zoos SA; John Haren, CEO, St Vincent de Paul Society (SA); Michael Vaughan, State Asset Manager SA, Adelaide Central Plaza; Dominic Lagana, State President, St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) and Claude Piscioneri, District Manager, ANZ Bank.
