When he was 16-years-old he was captured in Britain by Irish raiders and brought as a slave to Ireland. He spent six years in captivity in Ireland before escaping back to his family in Britain. It was around this time that he joined the priesthood and entered the church. He returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop and is credited with bringing Christianity to the countr y. He was also known to use the three- leafed clover of the shamrock to teach pagans the meaning of the Holy Trinity. It is believed he died in AD 460 on March 17 -- the date we celebrate St Patrick's Day.
