Proprietor and Manager B Siebert When refugee Narapati Ghimirey and his family arrived in Adelaide eight months ago, he immediately began searching for a representative of Catholic charity Caritas. "There are no words I can describe to thank Caritas for what they have done," says Narapati, 41. Left-over Caritas funds from the construction of a medicine hut helped the former school teacher and fellow asylum seekers build one of the first schools for children sheltering in a refugee camp in Nepal. "It was Caritas who shaped our children's future," he recently told the Southern Cross. Both Narapati's children were entirely educated at the very first school established among several camps in south-east Nepal housing 105,000 people, mostly of Tibetan origin, fleeing ethnic cleansing in Bhutan. Bhutan is bordered by India and China. Caritas Nepal went on to lobby the United Nations for more support in the camps and helped expand the school to later educate 2,700 refugee children. Narapati's teenage son and 10-year-old daughter are this year studying at St George College, on Henley Beach Rd, following successful scholarship applications. His wife is studying English and he is about to begin a Masters in Social Work at Flinders University. "Education is crucial to the empowerment and development of all people," he says. Since 1966, Caritas has been using its annual fundraiser Project Compassion for international aid to countries including Nepal. Last year $9.4 million was raised in Australia over the six weeks of Lent. This year in Nepal, Caritas Australia is helping train disadvantaged farmers to improve turnover. Caritas co-ordinator in Adelaide Angela Hart says she first met Narapati in September last year and was moved by his gratitude. "Narapati and his family are the very human face of how the simple gesture of starting up a Project Compassion box in the office, at home or at school, or donating online can really help those most in need," she says. "He was able to give children hope of a better future with a helping hand from Caritas." Mrs Hart said she was often overwhelmed by the generosity of the Adelaide community. "It makes my heart sing when I see some of these donations come in." The Adelaide community last year donated more than $1.2 million to Haiti Project Compassion and the Pakistan floods appeal through Caritas.
