Page 18 May 2011 www.thesoutherncross.org.au The Southern Cross | news The Youth For Christ (YFC) national conference was held in Adelaide last month, attracting more than 250 Catholic youth to the city. Youth aged from 13 to 21 years old from across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia met at Rostrevor College, Woodforde, from April 15 to 17. The YFC is the largest Catholic youth group in Australia with about 800 members and is recognised by the Vatican as an official ecclesial lay movement. The youth group began in Australia in 1994 and grew out of Couples For Christ (CFC) -- a Catholic lay organisation aimed at strengthening Catholic families and family life. South Australian CFC unit leader John Middeldorp said youth at the national conference were involved in three talks on the theme "Be faithful, be fruitful", sports competitions and creative activities (including dance and music). "The first two talks were delivered by Mervin and Rhia Victorino, a husband and wife team who testified to God's goodness on their life as youth, and as a married couple with a very young family," he said. "They are a witness to God's loving mercy and how He has remained faithful to them as they tried to remain faithful to Him. The last talk, one entitled "Abiding In Me", was delivered by Fr Brendan Connell cp. He captured the youth in his message of love and faithfulness to God. "The message of the conference was loud and clear, in that to continue to reap abundance in His goodness and mercy, we need to remain faithful and abide in Him always. " Mr Middeldorp said the conference not only had inspiring talks, it also had workshops which provided "reflection for the youth to look deep within themselves to see what they can do to overcome temptations and that despite falling into the pits repeatedly, God continues to love them". "It was amazing to witness these active and energetic Catholic youth praying and being before the Lord -- some on their knees -- in Adoration for over an hour and at the same time also taking their opportunity to attend the Sacrament of Confession. Adoration was held on the Saturday evening while confession was on-going. There were six priests who assisted with the Reconciliation. The Saturday evening ended with the youth making a 'promise' to God to try to live out their 'renewed' life." Mass was celebrated on Palm Sunday by Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson. The last conference of this kind was held in Adelaide five years ago. te u are for Mass, covering topics such as the Word, Music, Eucharist and Initiation.
