The family lived in a farming area known as Charra, midway between Ceduna and Penong. Peter was a toddler when the family left Charra, moving for a short time to Kangaroo Island and then moving again to Lameroo where his dad worked as a farm hand. As children, he and Pam played tricks such as pushing their two knuckles into the sand and raising the alarm 'the sheep are out', then standing back and watching the adults rush about looking for stray sheep. During the war years the family moved to Adelaide where he was introduced to formal schooling, starting off at Gilles Street School. The school provided a small oiled linen pouch and a small eraser, which was to be held between your teeth as a mouth guard in the event of an air raid. Later Peter started school at the Parkside Convent. Algebra homework was always a sticking point, so a group of lads gathered together and when someone solved the first problem everyone else would copy the answer down and so the system worked well until the teacher heard of it. The next day everyone received a telling off, then a caning followed by extra homework. Peter later obtained an apprenticeship in cabinet making. In 1955 Peter was called up for National Service. He spent three months in full training at Woodside and then part time for two years. Peter met Noreen Kelly at one of the regular weekend ballroom functions. They married in 1959 and moved to St Mary's where they started their family. As the building industry at the time was starting to slide, Peter decided to join the police force where he remained until his retirement. After retiring, he volunteered as school bus driver for the Sacred Heart Middle School, while also helping out with school activities such as the Pedal Prix. He drove the Mitcham Community bus for a while and volunteered at The Picket Fence, St Mary's Anglican Church. Peter was also a treasured member of the Catholic Charities "Tuesday Gentlemen", a group of retired men who assist with the Catholic Charities Appeals. For many years Peter made the trophies for the Catholic Charities Annual Golf Day. He was also involved in bell ringing, being the captain of the tower at St Francis Xavier's Cathedral and an active member of the International Police Association. Peter had an interesting and varied life, and will be remembered in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.
