The consolidation of parish properties follows a three-year consultation process about how faith lives are sustained and what ministries and properties are needed for a 21st century contemporary parish. Parish priest Father Anthony Kain said the Masses would be "an historical moment acting upon the outcomes of that process". "Glenelg has a proud history since the first St Mary's church/school was opened on the corner of Moseley and Bath Streets on June 6 1869, with the newly founded Josephites starting a school in the church the next day," he said. "This humble structure was replaced by St Mary's church/school in 1895, and the third Church added in 1927." With the post World War II population boom and a migrant camp in the parish, a second church/school was needed. Land was purchased in Glenelg North and two army huts were joined to provide a church/school. The first Mass in Our Lady of Fatima (pictured) was on December 7, 1947. Two years later the Dominican Sisters began a school with 37 students and three years later a new brick building was opened. On September 13, 1953 the parish opened another church/school, Our Lady of Grace in Glengowrie. Meanwhile, parishioners in Morphettville worshipped in a rented classroom at the Ascot Park primary school. In 1958 the Our Lady of Lourdes church/school was opened in Hendrie Street. With increasing access to transport and the ability to resource bigger schools, the Morphettville and Glenelg North schools closed, consolidating with St Mary's Memorial, Glenelg or Our Lady of Grace, Glengowrie. "Now consolidation leads us to sell those properties of Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Lourdes that have served and touched so many lives, Fr Kain said. "Many parishioners are 'moving house'. The needs which gave rise to these churches have shifted. The parish prays and works for a new unity and renewed ministries (especially Neighbourhood Church)." Fr Kain extended a special welcome to the closing Masses to former parishioners. Sudanese celebrate The Sudanese community in Adelaide celebrated South Sudan's transition to independence last month following the historic referendum held in the country in January. South Sudan became an independent nation on July 9, becoming the 54th country in Africa. The South Sudan Equatorian Communities Association of South Australia (SSECSA) held a celebration at St Martin's Catholic Primary School, Greenacres on July 16. Chinese anniversary The Catholic Chinese Catholic Community, which had its first mass celebrated on Christmas Eve in 1981 by Fr Roderick O'Brien, will celebrate its 30th anniversary at St Patrick's Church, Grote Street, on September 4. The Mass will be celebrated at 3.30pm by Archbishop Philip Wilson and concelebrated by Emeritus Archbishop Leonard Faulkner, Fr Roderick O'Brien and other local and visiting priests. It will be followed by a celebratory dinner at a local Chinese restaurant at 6.30pm where local and interstate Chinese Catholic faithfuls will have the opportunity to meet and share their love for one another and the experience of grace. Those who are interested in participating at the dinner are requested to contact Phyllis Lim on 0438 389 585. After 20 years of dedicated and hard working leadership Dean retired at our June 2011 meeting to spend more time with his family. We thank you Dean. The Catholic welfare agencies supported by Catholic Charities to care for the poor and needy in our community also thank you. Chancellor Cathy Whewell has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Catholic Charities Committee by Archbishop Philip Wilson. Two Josephite sisters from different sides of the Tasman are transforming the lives of families with deaf members. Anne Deegan and Majella O'Sullivan operate the Catholic Deaf Centre in Glenelg. The Centre provides access to services and resources that are difficult for the deaf to access within the hearing community, for example, a monthly deaf Mass allows access to liturgy in their own language. ..... ......The aim of the Catholic Deaf Association for over 30 years has been to educate or impart faith to members. There have been many changes, from teaching in the Centres of Hearing Impaired to individual teaching in the homes and with family groups. The aim now is to be involved with many aspects of family life...... .... Through her interpreting Majella has gained skills in a surprising assortment of areas such as massage, pruning and even job searching by accompanying and interpreting for a deaf person needing to learn these skills. A hearing person takes for granted everyday events like appointments with doctors, lawyers, job interviews and marriage counselling appoinments. With Majella the deaf now have similar access. The association supports children with deaf parents in our Catholic Schools. When the need for parent/teacher interviews arise, Majella attends and this makes communication easier for the teacher, making sure the parents understand exactly what is said..... ...Majella and Anne acknowledge the support of Catholic Charities in carrying out their work with the deaf. OUR HISTORY From Catholic Charities Newsletter August, 1995 The Cross Tasman Team - Anne Deegan and Majella O'Sullivan Sister Majella O'Sullivan, with Simon, Kylie, Lucas and Annette continues her work with the Catholic Deaf Association as she helps those with hearing difficulties achieve their ambitions and care for their families.
