Sacramental marriage is more than just receiving a blessing on your wedding day. It's living out your marriage vows daily and continually growing together amidst the ups and downs of married life. That's what a vocation is -- "a strong feeling of being destined or called to undertake a specific kind of work, often demanding a special commitment". Couples married for only a few years would probably all agree that marriage takes commitment and hard work. God calls us to use our unique love for each other, the way we live our lives, and interact with our family and our community in order to be a visible expression of His love for the world. When we create a home together, we become a little or domestic church and our sacrament, our marriage, is the visible expression of God's community. Of course, most of us get married with stars in our eyes and think our romantic love is indestructible and will last forever. But most of us wouldn't like to drive our car very far without the occasional grease and oil change. Every now and then we need to re-evaluate our relationships and reignite the dreams we had for our life on our wedding day. For those looking for that special something to renew their love and inspire them to live out the sacrament of marriage in new and meaningful ways, Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME) is a Catholic movement of couples and priests dedicated to enriching and supporting relationship-based vocations. A Marriage Encounter weekend provides an atmosphere for married couples to concentrate just on each other, free of the usual tension, pressures and interruptions. The weekend is also offered to priests and religious. Their vocation is to relate to their people in love, and it may help them deepen their understanding of that bond The next weekend is scheduled for 7-9 October, 2011 at Belair. Missionaries of the Sacred Heart At a time when many parishes have to do without altar servers, St David's at Tea Tree Gully has worked hard to reverse this trend and the results are now evident. Last month 28 altar servers were commissioned at the 10.30am Mass. Their ages ranged from 9 to 19 years of age. They and the parishioners were warmly welcomed by a traditional Indian liturgical dance. The main celebrant was Fr John O'Doherty OMI. Fr John addressed the servers and invited them to commit themselves to not only serving the Church but to serving their families. The Oblate priests in this community, Fr George Ryan OMI PP and Fr David Raj Francis OMI, and the Pastoral Associate, June Tucker, have been very supportive and encouraging with Fr David making this part of a long term project that encourages young people in the parish to participate in church ministries. While at least half of the servers have carried out this ministry for some years the remainder have commenced only recently. All servers and their families meet once every two months for training and to support one another as a small community within the parish. The older and more experienced servers have passed on their enthusiasm and help train and mentor new members. Altar servers on the up Priests L to R: Fr George Ryan OMI PP, Fr John O'Doherty OMI and Fr David Raj Francis OMI; Servers in alphabetical order: Miggy Chua-Lao, Edward Dobrzynski, Daneeka Feo, Dion Gamble, Shania Gamble, Lydia Geesing, Karolina Jarco, Mackenzie Lappin, Bronte Martin, Ethan Martin, Amy Mosbey, Bethany Parkinson, Deanna Parkinson, Kiara Parkinson, Ben Piotrowski, Kaya Piotrowski, Abi Rogers, Kate Rogers, Caroline Shaw, Ian Shaw, Emily Spencer, Laura Spencer and Riley Spencer. Leadership teams from around Australia will be discussing ways in which they can continue to support those called to married and religious life and the new national leaders for 2012-2015 will be prayerfully discerned. Here JOY SABA, from the SA/NT leadership team, talks about the importance of viewing marriage as a vocation.
