August 2011 Page 17 www.thesoutherncross.org.au The Southern Cross news | The completion of major building works at Nazareth Catholic Community was marked by two official opening ceremonies at the Findon and Flinders Park campuses on July 1. "The day presented us with the opportunity to celebrate the involvement of so many who have contributed to the developments at Nazareth over the last five years," said Mr Michael Dahl, Director of Nazareth Catholic Community. Archbishop Philip Wilson blessed the new facilities at both ceremonies. The Multi-purpose Hall at Findon was officially opened by the Hon Mark Butler MP and the new Music Centre and classrooms were officially opened by Mr Steve Georganas MP. The common theme among the speakers was the sense of community that exists at Nazareth. "What makes Nazareth the place that it is, is not the buildings, but those inside the buildings, what is going on in and around the buildings and how all at Nazareth work to help us live out our Vision -- a place of welcome, connecting faith, family and education," said Ms Ann Bliss, Chair, Nazareth Governing Council. The funds for the Multi- purpose Hall were provided by the Australian Government through the Building Education Revolution Program. Funds for the Flinders Park development were allocated through the Australian Government's Block Grant Authority. The Lameroo history book Pioneers and Progress reveals that donations of 50 pounds were placed on the foundation stone during the ceremony which marked the laying of the foundation stone of the Church of the Irish Martyrs (pictured) at Lameroo a century ago. Past parishioners are being invited back to Lameroo on August 28 when a Mass and luncheon will mark the 100th anniversary of the Church. Archbishop Philip Wilson will celebrate the Mass, to be followed by a luncheon at the Lameroo Hotel. Settlers arrived in Lameroo around 1900 but it was not until 1906 (when the railway line was opened) that the Southern Mallee began to grow in population, and the church was built five years later. A frenzy of fundraising took place in the few years preceding the laying of the foundation stone. In the Murray Mallee heritage survey of 1998 it was recommended that the Church of the Irish Martyrs be provisionally entered in the State Heritage Register. At the time, it was written in the statement of heritage value that the church was "an important example of the influence of Irish Catholicism in the development and social fabric of the township of Lameroo and the opening up of the Murray Mallee region, and a highly sophisticated type of lightweight construction and rural church architecture". The builder was James McInerney, and the Lameroo Catholic Women's League secretary Janet Byrne would be interested to hear from anyone (including his descendants) who may have details about him and any of his other building work. In 2002/03, with the assistance of a grant from the Lameroo Community Hotel, the church took on a new lease of life when the exterior was painted in recommended heritage colours. Lameroo CWL President Sharon Woodfield said she has already heard from several past parishioners, including one who was baptised in the church in 1944, who plan to attend the celebrations. Those interested in attending the luncheon are asked to register with Sharon on 8576 3107.
