The Southern Cross : November 2011
Page 4 November 2011 www.thesoutherncross.org.au The Southern Cross | news A new purpose-built, Catholic special school will be constructed in Adelaide for students with intellectual and multiple disabilities. The new $6 million school, designed by Thomson Rossi architects, replaces the 40-year-old St Ann's Special School at Marion. St Ann's is a non-graded Catholic Special School that caters for up to 54 students aged from 5 to 20 years of age. All students have an intellectual disability and many have multiple disabilities and complex health and personal care needs. It is anticipated that students will start at the new school in 2013. The new school will be built on the former Cardinia Primary School (R-7) site in Flinders Park. Cardinia was closed when it amalgamated with other local primary schools in 2007 to form Nazareth Catholic College. Charles Sturt Council last month approved the development and work will begin at the site next year. Catholic Education Office resource operations coordinator Jan Hurley said the new school was being funded by Catholic Education South Australia and included Federal Government funding. She said land surrounding the new school site was acquired at an additional cost of about $3.3 million. Catholic Education SA and the school have worked closely with the architects for several years to carefully plan and design a new learning environment for these students that is child safe and student centred. Particular attention was paid to the use of natural lighting, security, acoustics, colour, ease of access, arrangement of space, and the integration of, and transition between, external and internal learning spaces. Ms Mary Jacquier, the Principal of St Ann's, said it was an exciting time in the life of the school community. "The new school will be supportive of a contemporary philosophy and pedagogical approaches to the education of young people, and in particular for students with special needs," she said. "The current site at Marion was originally a parish junior school. It was never designed to meet the educational needs of these students." The new school will include a staff administration building, including a lecture room for training, an activity hall, and two separate indoor and outdoor learning clusters for the junior school and middle and senior school. The grounds are planned to provide interesting and interactive spaces for students, and specialised equipment designed to meet their sensory needs will be installed. TRULY FIXED BY YOU: For several minutes, six students with intellectual disabilities from St Ann's Special School transfixed an audience of 1800 adults with their perfect rendition of Cold Play's "Fix You" at the 2011 Catholic Schools Music Festival at the Festival Theatre in September. Using a sound beam, the students played the piano and the flute mid-air. They sang and danced impromptu to the roaring standing applause of the crowd, some of whom were in tears. Pictured are: (front L-R) Georgia and Claire, with music coordinator Matthew Kemp holding the guitar and (back L-R) Dale, religious education coordinator Wendy Huezenroeder, Abbey, Asha, teacher Sally Johnson and Kalli. There were many spectacular and age-defying acts from the night's talented performers and the 200-strong Festival Choir.
