The Southern Cross : December 2011
December 2011 Page 5 www.thesoutherncross.org.au The Southern Cross news | An estimated 3000 people visited an icon of Our Lady from Pompeii, Italy, at the Adelaide Archdiocese's Newton Parish last month, raising hopes of a renewed practice of the Rosary. Newton Parish Priest Father John Cooper OFM said the icon's image of the Blessed Mother handing the Rosary to Saint Catherine of Siena and Baby Jesus handing the Rosary to St Dominic was "especially significant". "I hope this visit of the icon has increased in all of us a greater sense of hope and a new spirit of prayer and devotion," said Fr Cooper. "I hope it has reminded us as Catholics that the Rosary is a powerful sign that we are still Catholic even if we are far away from the regular practice of our faith." The large and multicultural crowd which visited the icon at St Francis of Assisi Church from November 4 to 6 pleased the three visiting priests from Pompeii, in southern Italy. "The response by the community was very positive," said Fr Giuseppe Ruggiero. He said it was the first time the icon of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii has visited Adelaide. The 30-year-old replica of the original icon is venerated across Italy and visited by four million pilgrims annually in Pompeii. The icon first travelled to Australia in 2006 in Melbourne and Sydney. Fr Ruggiero said the icon was universally special. "People, when they look at the icon, they feel a spiritual presence of Mary. "Italians know very well the Virgin of Pompeii and have grown up with this devotion but even people who don't know the history feel something warm and something marvelous." Fr Ruggiero, coordinator of the English edition of the magazine "Il Rosario e la Nuova Pompei", was part of the Australian delegation of the Marian Mission of the Rosary led by Father Andrea Fontanella and including Fr Giovanni Russo and Dominic Romano. Territorial Prelature of Pompeii Archbishop Carlo Liberati was unable to travel for health reasons. Following Adelaide, the icon visited Melbourne and Sydney in November. The historical icon of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii is reported to have been found in a dilapidated church in 1873 and restored by the founder of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii, Bartolo Longo.
