The Southern Cross : December 2011
Page 14 December 2011 www.thesoutherncross.org.au It has been a great honour to work closely with Archbishop Philip Wilson in his first 10 years as Archbishop of Adelaide. I am very proud of him. He is a wise and prudent bishop, a man of great vision and ability. Each day I see his dedication to and love of the Church, priests and deacons and the people of God. He impresses me greatly with the leadership he is giving both nationally and internationally as the Church confronts the issues of our time. Monsignor David Cappo Vicar General Over these past 10 years Archbishop Wilson has, through careful consultation, set down for us a bold vision for the future and begun the hard work of building on the Church's strengths, the greatest of which is its faithful, religious and laity. The Leap Ahead project provides for the strengthening of our parishes and their staffing, our Catholic school system has continued to grow and deepen its mission, our Catholic hospitals have grown fourfold and family support services have been strengthened. The Clergy Care Council has established a comprehensive framework to care for the needs of our priests and deacons, particularly the growing number of retired and sick priests. It is right and fitting that we should now pause and say our thanks for the gifts of leadership and vision he has given to our Church both here in SA, to the whole Australian Church as Chair of the Australian Bishops Conference and as a consequence his many responsibilities to the universal Church. Greg Crafter Chair, Archdiocesan Finance Council Working closely with Archbishop Wilson has given us a first-hand opportunity to see the devotion of his daily life to the Church through: his capacity to listen and to learn from others' ideas and his vision of Church which places family life at its heart are evident when he meets with the Diocesan Pastoral Council, listening to their advice to him about family life and how the Church can nourish families. His dedication to prayer and to worship is very evident in the delight he has in each opportunity he has to be with the people of the Archdiocese. Celebrations of Confirmation are particularly enjoyed as joy-filled occasions by the Archbishop. Congratulations Archbishop and thank you. Heather Carey and Cathy Whewell Chancellors Archbishop Wilson -- son of a pharmacist, a product of a Marist education, and a self-confessed slow rugby player. He came to us from Wollongong and brought with him eloquence and a new vision for the Adelaide Archdiocese. Flying in the face of the conservative cynics, VS1 (SA Water House) was built, providing us with a long-term financial base for the future. Status quo is not on his agenda and there is more to come. Graham Spurling former chair of the Archdiocesan Finance Council Archbishop Wilson is a great supporter of Catholic Education. I am impressed with the amount of time he has found in his busy diary to visit schools, especially in this time as we have opened so many buildings with the Government's BER program. Driving around to these openings with the Archbishop I have always been impressed with the easy and natural way conversation unfolds across topics which can range from military history through to matters of faith in our day. The integrity that Archbishop Wilson brings to any professional standards issue is also a highlight for me. He is exemplary in the commitment he has to the creation of child-safe environments and his work in Adelaide in this area has been transformative for us. Paul Sharkey Director, Catholic Education SA and Chancellor The Catholic Religious of South Australia are grateful for the support and respect shown to our different Congregations by Archbishop Wilson. We especially value his appreciation for all Religious men and women who minister in the Adelaide Archdiocese and acknowledge his integrity and compassion that accompanies our mission to serve both in the Church and the wider society. We congratulate Archbishop Wilson on his 10th anniversary and we wish him many blessings of peace and joy in the future. Sr Marion Gambin rsj Provincial Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph on behalf of Catholic Religious of SA Leaders from various Churches often comment on Archbishop Wilson's generous hospitality and caring companionship. These gifts have been especially evident at times of individual grief or celebration and the Archbishop has taken the time to phone or write. In addition to leading gatherings of Heads of Churches, locally and nationally, Archbishop Wilson has opened his home each year to SA leaders and their partners for the sharing of a meal and conversation, contributing greatly to getting to know one another better. Recently the Archbishop led Prayer for the meeting of Leaders of Christian Churches in the Cathedral, around the Stations of the Cross. All appreciated the prayerfulness and the gift that the Stations offer the wider Christian community on the journey together in Christ. Geraldine Hawkes Executive Officer SA Council of Churches His Grace Archbishop Philip Wilson is a champion in promoting multiculturalism within the Church. He will always do his best to avail himself at all activities organised by the multicultural communities. Archbishop Wilson unites the Church in faith and in charity as the Grand Prior of the Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Our heartiest congratulations to His Grace. David Wong Catholic Chinese Community of SA Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Archbishop Philip Wilson is a supportive and collaborative leader. In his tireless work for Christ he has always reaffirmed in me and members of the Society the words of St Vincent, who often said "Christ is the absolute centre, He is the Rule". On behalf of the Society I congratulate him on his 10th anniversary as Archbishop of Adelaide. Dominic Lagana State President St Vincent de Paul Society Over the past 10 years Archbishop Wilson has been involved in a wide range of activities, initiatives and groups in the Adelaide Archdiocese.
