This year, Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Stirling East celebrated its 130th anniversary. Just 15km south-east in Mount Barker Our Lady of Mercy Church marked the centenary of the laying of its foundation stone in November 1911. "We celebrate a special event remembering the laying of the foundation stone of this church," said Mt Barker/Strathalbyn Parish Priest Father John Vildzius at a blessing ceremony last month. "It is an event that links us with people of faith who lived and worked and played and loved in this very town 100 years ago -- people who raised families, children who went to school." Fr Vildzius paid tribute to the pioneering parishioners and their great vision for the future of the faith and the Church, as well as their practical dedication and generosity. "They also had great courage, for to set out on such a large and expensive project would have been courageous indeed, but their motivation and conviction on the importance of having this place inspired them," he said. The church will celebrate the centenary of its opening in August 2012. Meanwhile in October, a gathering of about 60 people celebrated the 130th anniversary of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in the Adelaide Hills Parish with a Mass by Emeritus Archbishop Leonard Faulkner. A dedicated team of volunteers has been donating time to preserving the 130-year-old Adelaide Hills Parish church which stopped celebrating Mass 15 years ago following a devastating fire which gutted its interior. "It's the most beautiful building," says Debbie Somers, one of nine committee members of the Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Stirling East. "But more than that, it was Irish settlers and local people who built the church with their own hands and donated their money for the (13) stained-glass windows," says Mrs Somers, whose son was baptised at Our Lady of the Rosary. The neo-gothic Church was built in 1881-82 on Old Mt Barker Road and was Stirling's first Catholic Church. The original pews and the stained-glass windows -- commemorating Catholic communities in the Adelaide Hills, clergy and lay people -- remain. Committee member Glenda Le'Gallant said though devastated by fire in 1999, the Church was lovingly renovated and has hosted over 120 Christian weddings and ecumenical gatherings to help fund the historic building's maintenance and operation. She said the committee was set up 12 years ago to help keep the church viable and can recall committee members hand-picking stone from the Littlehampton quarry to ensure renovations matched the existing stonework of the Church. "Everyone on the committee is very dedicated and almost everyone is connected to or knows of someone connected to the church in some way."
