It is extremely rare for the relic, the right forearm of the saint (pictured left), to leave Il Gesu in Rome, the mother church of the Society of Jesus where it is under care of the Jesuits, the order co-founded by St Francis. The relic arrived in Australia on September 16, accompanied by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Sydney, Bishop Peter Comensoli, who is the national custodian of the relic. "As a priest who blessed and baptised more than 300,000 in his travels through India and Japan, St Francis Xavier was one of Australia's missionary patrons and has special significance to Australian Catholics," said Bishop Comensoli. The relic will visit the dioceses of Bathurst, Wollongong, Canberra Goulburn, Wagga Wagga, Sandhurst, Sale, Melbourne and Ballarat before arriving in Adelaide. Here it will be processed into St Francis Xavier's Cathedral at 5.30pm by the Vicar General Fr Philip Marshall and four members of the Goan Indian community, prior to 6pm Mass. There will be a triduum of Masses over the next three days at 5.45pm and on Tuesday at 7.30pm the Indian community will celebrate Mass in the Cathedral, followed by a Goan meal and a short play on the life of St Francis Xavier in the Cathedral Hall. School groups and individuals will have an opportunity to visit the relic which will be on display to the public in a glass reliquary from 8am to 10pm. On Thursday October 18 the relic will leave the Cathedral at 10am for Port Pirie. The Southern Cross has produced this special feature on the life and legacy of St Francis Xavier as a resource for schools and others.
